Alter State is Australia’s unparalleled disability-led arts initiative celebrating Deaf and Disabled artists, creativity and culture engaging audiences and artists across Australia.

The Alter State 2024 program features performance, contemporary art, film, workshops, a two-day symposium and parties. The program is accessible, intersectional, and relaxed, featuring Auslan interpreting, live captions, audio description, mobility access and quiet spaces at the events.
Experience the Alter State 2024 program as we explore ‘Disabled Futures: A glimpse of what’s to come’, happening in eight venues across Melbourne and online from 2 to 13 October.
We are involved with and/or supporting 7 Programs in the years’ festival. These include:
Wurundjeri Traditional Owners will lead the Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony. They welcome people of all nations, cultural backgrounds and disabilities to Alter State. This will officially open Alter State for 2024.

A closed yarning circle led by Joshua Pether (Kalkadoon) and Uncle Paul Constable Calcott (Wiradjrui).
This closed event welcomes First Nations Deaf and Disabled artists from all nations across Australia and the Torres Strait along with local mob from metropolitan and regional Victoria. Mob will gather under the guidance and wisdom of the elder in residence.
Please note: This is a closed event designed for First Nations persons only.

The Manifesto writes the Disabled future we want. Andi Snelling and the Transmit Futures ensemble will create a performance manifesto for Disabled futures.

Join a Masterclass that is a unique immersive journey into the captivating world of Deaf storytelling on screen and take part in a masterclass experience.

Join disability advocate Eliza Hull in this inclusive songwriting workshop. Eliza believes that everybody has a story, and she will share how you can tap into yours through song. During this songwriting workshop, Eliza will share insight into writing a song and helpful prompts for times when inspiration doesn’t strike.

The Gathering is our monthly forum for Deaf and Disabled artists and industry guests. The gathering will be at The Channel as Part of Alter State. It will be a hybrid event, you can join in person or online via Zoom.
