Australian festival director takes cinema access across the globe

Film and festival director Rick Randall, Artistic Director of The Other Film Festival, has travelled to Israel where he will participate as keynote speaker at a forum on cinema access.
Access to cinema relates to how people with disabilities, particularly those who are blind and deaf, view films at the cinema through solutions such as captioning and audio description. The forum is part of new Israeli international film festival, Shekel – Reframing Reality, ‘challenging the concept of disability’, which focuses on disability-centred films from 2010-2011.
The festival will also be screening Australian animator and director Adam Elliot’s Mary & Max and Australian short films including Sophie Hyde’s Necessary Games, a film about dance and disability that was screened at The Other Film Festival in 2010.
Randall’s attendance at the festival is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ambassador to Israel, Andrea Faulkner. His presentation will cover the 2009 Action on Cinema Access campaign which generated significant community response and contributed to the Federal Government’s development of the Cinema Access Implementation Plan.
Shekel – Reframing Reality, runs until 27 May 2011.
