Captioned Cinema
Open Caption provides access to movies for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, by rendering the audio as text, usually at the bottom of the screen.
Audio Described Cinema
Media Access Australia’s Cheif Executive Alex Varley has met with representatives from Vision Australia and Blind Citizens Australia to discuss various audio description issues, including the lack of AD in cinemas.
The DTS access system currently being used in ten cinemas across Australia currently only shows captions. More than half of the access disks used for captioned cinema have audio description tracks on them as well. The equipment requires a further module, costing approximately $3,000, for it to play the audio description tracks. The cinema may have to make some minor modifications to its sound system and purchase headphones for people to hear the AD soundtrack.
The cinemas are located in: Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Hobart, Maroochydore, Melbourne, Newcastle, Perth and Sydney. There is an active campaign to expand the number of cinemas that have access. If you are interested in this issue please visit Media Access Australia’s website at www.audiodescription.com.au
