Deaf Can Dance
Deaf Can Dance is an initiative of Deaf Arts Network, a core program of Arts Access Victoria.
Deaf Can Dance began with a group of six Deaf people who came together through their shared interest in dance and created a unique and award winning dance theatre performance, ‘Sound of Silence’ that performed to sell out audiences at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2008.
The show was seen by a large number of the Deaf community and the wider community. The feedback from all audiences was that it was high quality art that brought the hearing and Deaf communities together, raising awareness and understanding of the Deaf community and creating positive role models for young Deaf people.
This work generated a lot of interest and has subsequently led to further performances in 2009 taking place at The Art of Difference Festival, the Ausdance Awards in June and the opening of the World Congress of Mental Health and Deafness in October, Brisbane.
