Way Out West (WOW) is a quality visual and performing arts program for adults with an intellectual disability, physical disability or acquired brain injury.

Way Out West provides respite for families/carers living in the West or North region of Melbourne, especially elderly parents/ carers from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Way Out West is facilitated by professional practising artists, and is fully supported by qualified disability workers.

Details

  • Way Out West meets at the Overnewton Gatehouse Gallery, cnr Old Calder Hwy & Overnewton St, Keilor (Melways map 14 E3)
  • Runs fortnightly on Saturdays 9.30am – 2.30pm, February – December 2010
  • Costs: $6 per session (paid in advance half yearly)

Requirements

  • Wear comfortable clothes which can get dirty
  • Bring lunch that doesn’t need heating
  • Bring a change of clothes if necessary

Eligibility

Arts Access Victoria receives Respite funding from the Department of Human Services, North and West Region for Way Out West.  This means group members must be

  • living at home with a family member or volunteer carer
  • registered with DHS
  • living in the West or North region of Melbourne
  • over 18 years old

Way Out West group members have been involved in a wide range of art mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, costume design, mask making, puppetry, theatre skills,singing, percussion and dance. They have exhibited their artwork at The Brimbank Festival, the Hunt Club Community Arts Centre and the Big West Festival.

In addition to making art, an important aspect of Way Out West is providing adults with a disability with the opportunity to meet new people and share similar creative and social interests.
