Art Day South

Art Day South is a flagship program of Arts Access Victoria. For more than 12 years it has been a model of ‘inclusive practice’, where the artists work collaboratively with each other and the participants.

Facilitated by professional practicing artists and fully supported by qualified disability workers, Art Day South is an opportunity for participants to develop their creative and social skills as individuals and as members of a group.

Participants have created many exciting projects including filmmaking, animation, costume design, set design, mask making, puppetry, sculpture, papier mache, theatre performance and dance. A visual artist and a performing artist work with the participants to continually introduce new art forms and to develop existing skills. As much as possible, the artists ensure that the program is “participant-driven,” meaning each member of the group has a say in the artistic direction of the program. Each year, the group works towards a public outcome, which can be anything from a small exhibition in the local community, to a large-scale performance at a high profile theatre space.

In addition to the art activities, an important aspect of the program is providing adults with an intellectual disability with the opportunity to meet new people who share similar creative and social interests.
