Rudder Visual Arts Mentoring Program
Rudder will inhabit the NGV Studio from the 5th to 30th of September with an exhibition showing artistic outcomes and the process of collaboration, experimentation and development of mentoring partnerships between five mentoring partnerships.
The Artful Dodgers Studios is one of Australia’s leading community cultural development programs. It offers young people 16-28, who may face barriers to education and employment, the opportunity to work alongside artists and other creative professionals in a safe and vibrant arts space.
Rudder is the mentoring program of the Artful Dodgers Studios. It has been established for young artists who have been engaged at the Artful Dodgers Studios and wish to further develop their art practice.
Rudder matches established visual artists (mentors) with young people with a passion for art (mentees) to work together in a mentoring partnership. Mentor – mentee partnerships are primarily matched by art form.
Many of the participants/mentees have faced barriers to employment or education and have not undergone formal arts training, however they are dedicated to their arts practice.
There will be five mentor – mentee partnerships, matched by art form.
Weekly group mentoring sessions will be held in the Rudder Studio focusing on exhibition planning, artist talks, and arts industry issues.
Visual artists, working in any medium, including street art, installation or new media are encouraged to apply
In some instances Mentees may enter the Rudder program without having attended the Artful Dodgers Studios if they meet the eligibility criteria.
This is a voluntary position, however an honorarium of $1500 will be provided along with up to $500 materials budget, training and ongoing support for the mentors.
Visual artists, working in any medium, including street art, installation or new media are encouraged to apply.
We are also seeking artists 17-27 (that are not engaged in full time study or work) who have a passion for visual art and would like free studio space and a mentor.
