Kristy Sweeney’s ‘Organ series’

Arts Access Victoria artists Joceline Lee  and Kristy Sweeney travelled to Sydney recently for the Opening of Framing Gravity, Accessible Arts’ AART.BOXX11 national survey exhibition of current visual arts practices by Australian artists, on Friday 21 October, 6.00 – 8.00pm at SCA Gallery, Sydney College of the Arts.

Joceline Lee, recently named Best Emerging Visual Artist at the 2011 Melbourne Fringe Awards, will exhibit work from her Rendered Bones exhibition, in which she shares her remarkable pen and ink drawings of rarely-seen specimens from Melbourne Museum’s vast Vertebrate Palaeontology collection.

Kristy Sweeney, who also featured in AART.BOXX in 2008, will be showcasing her Organ Series, a collection of pen and ink sketches of selected human organs.  Kristy subverts the traditional method of labelling the individual organ parts and forms by taking her labels from found text rather than reflecting the accurate anatomical nature of the organ’s usage.  Her use of vivid colour in the composition further challenges the viewer’s conception of the body.

In her presentation of form over function, Kristy challenges what the human body is capable of, and what the organ’s purpose might truly be.  As such, Kristy’s Organ Series has inspired AART.BOXX’s wearable art workshops Taken to Heart, in which internal organs become the theme for wearable sculpture and jewellery. Taken to Heart is part of a dynamic series of public programs held over the two week duration of the Framing Gravity exhibition.

Inclusion in the AART.BOXX 11 exhibition is an important and encouraging development for both Joceline and Kristy as contemporary artists, and as artists with a disability. Participation in, and access to, arts and cultural activity by people with a disability are integral to supporting and maintaining a society which fosters creativity, innovation and community enrichment.
