Rendered Bones – An exhibition by Joceline Lee

RenderedBones_JC.jpg

In her first solo show Rendered Bones, artist Joceline Lee shares her observations of rarely-seen specimens from Melbourne Museum’s vast Invertebrate Palaeontology collection. Through her current artist residency with the Museum, Lee has created a sophisticated series of drawings depicting the dynamic, complex skeletal structures of long-extinct fauna for exhibition at Federation Square’s No Vacancy Project Space, 3 – 9 October as part of the 2011 Melbourne Fringe Festival.

Rendered Bones interprets the fragile nature of fossilised structures from both sketch models and physical configurations. Working mostly with ink on paper, Joceline renders skulls, carcasses, rib cages in intricate detail, re-imagining the basic frameworks of a diverse range of animal life.

Joceline’s studies of bone structure have been informed by her recent artist residency at Melbourne Museum’s Palaeontology Collection, supported by visual artist and sculptor Rob Delves. Joceline, whose work explores skeletal ‘architecture’, had the exciting opportunity to work with life-sized skeletons for the first time. Her location within the Museum’s ‘no access zone’ means that through the lens of her art practice, the public will have the chance to engage with an otherwise ‘off limits’ subject at the Rendered Bones exhibition.
