Melbourne artists with a disability Joceline Lee and Kristy Sweeney have been selected to participate in AART.BOXX 11, a national exhibition of visual arts by artists with a disability, to be held in Sydney from 20 October to 5 November 2011.
Both Joceline and Kristy are young emerging artists with an intellectual disability who attend Arts Access Victoria’s Art Day South program every Friday at the Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre.
They are two of only fifteen artists selected to be featured in this prestigious national exhibition.
Joceline and Kristy have been invited to Sydney to take part in the exhibition opening and the associated professional development and networking events. They cannot travel unaccompanied so there is also a need to cover the travel and accommodation costs for the two carers who must travel with them.
The total travel and accommodation costs amount to $4,000 but thanks to generous donations from the Freedman Foundation and the Dingley Lion’s Club, the amount needed to be raised is $2,000.
Thus, Arts Access Victoria is supporting Joceline and Kristy by setting up this appeal to help these artists travel to Sydney and represent Victoria at this important exhibition.
Inclusion in the AART.BOXX 11 exhibition is an important and encouraging development for both Joceline and Kristy as contemporary artists, and as artists with a disability. Participation in, and access to, arts and cultural activity by people with a disability are integral to supporting and maintaining a society which fosters creativity, innovation and community enrichment.
Joceline, who was awarded a JUMP mentorship in 2010 as part of the Australia Council’s inaugural national mentoring program for young and emerging artists, has recently commenced an artist residency at the Melbourne Museum in preparation for her upcoming exhibition ‘Rendered Bones’, as part of the 2011 Melbourne Fringe Festival.
Joceline’s work explores animal bones, skeletal figures and anatomical studies; working mostly in ink on paper, she re-imagines these structures, in bold and subtle detail. Kristy’s work displays an ongoing fascination with anything from dragons to exotic animals, to explorations of native Australian wildlife.
You can help Joceline and Kristy get to Sydney by making a contribution to their travel costs. All donations above $2 are tax deductible.
