HELP IMPROVE THE WAY PEOPLE WITH A DISABILITY ARE PORTRAYED

30 June 2011

The Office for Disability wants to add new photographs to their image library. They are seeking people of different ages and backgrounds with a range of disabilities who are happy to be photographed alone or with friends, family members or colleagues – whatever feels natural and comfortable.

The settings will be as flexible and varied as cafes, shops, cinemas or theatres, at work, people’s homes, sporting clubs or festivals.

Thematically the photographs will highlight participation, social inclusion, leadership and human rights.

A representative from the Office for Disability will attend all photography shoots and will make sure people’s individual requirements are met and that everything runs smoothly.

The images will be used in publications, presentations and may become part of a new media charter aimed at improving the way people with a disability are depicted in the public domain.

If you are interested in helping to improve the way people with a disability are represented please contact Vanessa Simpson at the Office for Disability on 9208 3024 or email vanessa.simpson@dpcd.vic.gov.au

Hi I would like to portrayed as a person with a disability who is unemployed and angry about it. Talented hardworking solid community member but unemployed. Possibly because of cultural aversion to fat people or even because I look different and am not the desired norm, I am fat female and lacking a limb. I use Fitzroy pool regularly for exercise and am a community volunteer as well as an artist, with a great life experience but still unemployed. Is it ageism, social exclusion or xenophobia.

I have Spina Bifida & I sing with the Brimbank Multicultural Community Choir.

We practise at the Hunt Club in Deer Park on Monday nights from 7pm till 9:30pm.

We perform in events mainly in the western suburbs of Melbourne & have also sung at the St Kilda Festival & the Cultural Festival for the Commonwealth Games in 1996 at an event called Sing for Water, which raised money for people in villages in East Timor to have clean water & sanitisation.

On Saturday 13 August, we will be performing as part of a combined choir in Last Night of the Proms with another choir, SingWest, the Western Region Concert Band, the Victoria Police Pipe Band & special guest artist Gina Jeffries & her husband at Williamstown Town Hall.

I will tell my choir leader about your initiative & ask if the choir would mind if photos were taken of them.
