Cultural Program for Australian Deaf Games 2012

There will also be an original and exciting HIP HOP performance involving over 60 deaf and hard of hearing school students. We want to show the audience the energy and creativity that deaf young people have to offer. With an audience of 1800 people in attendance, this will be an experience that students will never forget!

Opening Ceremony – Saturday 14th January 5:30 pm

Venue: The Arena in Geelong, 110 Victoria Street, Nth Geelong. Capacity 1,800 people

(The Geelong Arena is an indoor facility seating 1,800 people and has been host to prominent National and International competitions inclusive of the 2006 Commonwealth Games, Australian Masters Games and the National Basketball League. Recent live concerts at the arena have been Suzi Quatro, Jimmy Barnes, Kelly Clarkson, The Cat Empire and Shannon Noll.)

Ceremony to include:

  • Welcome to country by Indigenous Deaf Elder
  • Athlete’s Parade  -over 800 athletes from across Australia, Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand
  • National Anthem  (sung in sign) and Flag raising
  • Athlete’s and referees Oath
  • Official Speeches
  • Performance by Deaf Can Dance and Strange Fruit.
  • Performance by over 60 deaf and hard of hearing school students from across Victoria in collaboration with A.R.A.B. (Anti Racism Action Band – a dynamic youth arts organisation)

Deaf Film Screening

  • Arts Access Victoria will provide a screening of films from the Deaf stream of The Other Film Festival throughout the week.

Closing Ceremony – Saturday 21st January 5:00 pm

Venue: Costa Hall in Geelong.  Capacity -2000

Ceremony to include:

  • Highlights from the Games
  • Presentation of awards/ADFS Cup
  • Official Speeches
  • Performance by the Australian Theatre of the Deaf.
