Girish Makwana
Girish Makwana was born in Gujurat, India and received his Masters of Music from the Maharajah Sayajirao University of Baroda. In 1999 he became the first musician from an Indian classical background to be accepted into the Ph.D. program at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with the aim of producing an electronic version of the tabla tarang, a rare and neglected percussion instrument. Girish has performed in various countries around the world (Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa) in various festivals and concerts, including the Sydney Festival, Berlin Festival, University of Sydney, University of Wollongong, Illawara Music Festival, Earthcore and Darebin Music Festival.
He has performed with a variety of musicians from many backgrounds, from Indian classical to jazz, Western classical and electronica. Indian classical musicians he has performed with include Pandit Kamlesh Maitra (tabla tarang), Manahar Udhas (vocal), Pt. Purshottam Upaddhay (vocal), Pt. Suvranlata Rao (sitar), Mrs Kanchan Verma (Sarod) and Mr. Nicolas Buff (Saprano Saxophone). Has also worked with Nigel MacLean, musician and composer of short film “Forged” and Dale Cornelius musician and composer of doco. film ” John Gollings, Eye For Architecture”.
